Financial Controller, North Asia

The finance controller oversees the financial accounting, operational finance and financial controls for North Asia, which includes China (Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou), Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea markets. Reporting directly into the APAC Controller, they will be supported by the regional hub for shared services, external accounting partners and 2 accountants.

What you’ll need to bring to the party

  • An appreciation of global financial concepts, including transfer pricing and taxation  
  • Ability to develop, produce, analyse and effectively interpret financial information, including the effects of business and technology initiatives and trends
  • Ability to understand and use financial tools and systems, including Oracle, Hyperion and Excel
  • Experience working in a global organization with stakeholders across multiple territories
  • Experience working with remote teams and outsourced service providers
  • Good presentation and communication skills, proficient in English and in Mandarin;
  • Experienced in tax planning and in dealing with local tax authorities

What you’ll be doing

  • Monthly closing process
  • Work with GFS to plan for local resources and optimize internal process during monthly closing process for internal and external reporting
  • Review all GL Journal; complete controller review on monthly closing results
  • Ensure reporting deadlines and data quality requirements are met
  • Review local  financial statements and  account reconciliations to ensure  any exceptional or open items are approved and cleared timely
  • Closely track and follow up on key balance sheet  items and overall North Asia financial position
  • Lead half year and year end reporting process
  • Lead monthly review with GTS and other key PL item owners outside of North Asia
  • Financial controls
  • Adhere to Group accounting policy
  • Understand and apply DAM / CAM / PAM / FIVA / Global sourcing / travel policy control requirements
  • Lead accounting team to conduct regular and random check on T&E to ensure compliance
  • Work with Procurement to streamline Oracle i-Procurement and ensure purchase compliance
  • Work with APAC controllership team and Group treasury team to ensure treasury activities are properly planned, authorized and executed
  • Partner with compliance, legal, and internal audit functions of APAC and group to ensure financial controls are in place throughout the business cycles
  • Lead the external audit coordination for the North Asia region in cooperation with GFS teams
  • Operational finance support (billing, invoicing, collection, payment)
  • Lead accounting team to support transactional billing, invoicing, collection, and payment
  • Manage working capital level including DBO/DSO and control client/vendor credit arrangement
  • Working with Procurement to support cost efficiency projects
  • Lead accounting team to ensure foreign currency transaction fully comply with SAFE, PBOC, and other regulatory bodies’ requirement
  • Lead accounting team to ensure VAT practice fully comply with China tax law
  • Cash-flow management
  • Lead cash flow planning and be the contact point with group treasury function
  • Regularly review cash flow forecast with GC BU that directly report to APAC/Group such as GTS, GPD, etc.
  • Work with regional team to plan and execute funding arrangement
  • CAPEX
  • Lead on CAPEX investment approval financial review
  • Management of by-project CAPEX on budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and analysis
  • Review and ensure capitalization and D&A controls
  • Ensure fixed asset ledgers for in-scope BU’s and entities are well maintained
  • Tax
  • Lead local accounting team to deal with local tax authorities and ensure copmliance with golden tax requirements
  • Ensure tax related internal controls are properly maintained, including well maintained contract, voucher, invoices, debit/credit notes
  • Highlight tax related risks and suggest solution
  • Be the contact point with group tax team and internal / external tax consultants
  • Sales target and staff cost measurement support
  • Finance side support on the measurement of performance linked staff costs, e.g. vetting commission basis
  • Other regular and ad-hoc compensation and benefit related analysis
  • Recharges and inter-company
  • Review recharge schedules by type; Validate and follow up with group contacts on reasonableness of recharges
  • Review internal billing and align with group, region, and country finance position
  • Work with GFS to ensure inter-company differences are properly reconciled
  • Ensure tax related documentation on recharges are adequately maintained
  • Lead on TP arrangement to ensure proper planning and documentation compliance
  • Company secretary work
  • Maintain a register of license, chops, mandates, and all external registry information to ensure timely updates
  • Support on board meeting related documentation
  • Lead on ad-hoc changes requested by country and region
  • System
  • Monitor and coordinate timely with group and regional experts to solve system issues that affect accounting work, such as HFM/Oracle/SalesInsights/ChangePoint
  • Clarify system logics needed for country finance
  • Facility
  • Work with regional facility team and country admin team in the decision of short-term and long-term lease arrangement
  • Provide financial analysis and support on facility arrangement
  • People management
  • Lead a team of 2 financial accountants in the Greater China team, 3 external accounting partners (Korea, Japan & Taiwan) and utilize GFS shared service resources efficiently
  • Maintain strong and positive working environment to ensure high performance and positive team culture aligned to The Experian Way
  • Other Finance management related work required from country finance

Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with a range of stakeholders remotely
  • Ability to work in a complex, fast paced environment and respond under ambiguous situations
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail and is highly logical and numerate
  • Ability to present ideas and opinions in a collaborative, credible and influential manner
  • A continuous improvement mind-set and experience in process improvement will be an added advantage
  • Appreciate result oriented, high performance culture and environment

Skills & Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in audit or controllership
  • CA/CPA/CIMA qualification will be a plus
  • Excellent people skills with proven track record of working with remote stakeholders effectively.
  • Experience in financial reporting, accounting standards interpretation, local tax regulations and managing an external audit.
  • Proficiency in financial systems and applications; Oracle, Hyperion, reporting tools and Microsoft Excel will be added advantage
